Has anyone ever told you that all mosquitos bite you? Well, you can tell them they are wrong because it’s not true! Guess what? Mosquitos don’t even “bite” either, they suck. There are many myths surrounding the infamous mosquito but it’s important to get your facts right.
What You Probably Didn’t Know
It is time to set the record straight and bless you with some knowledge! Here are some interesting things to know about the mosquito.
-There are over 3,500 species of mosquitos in the world. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, there are close to 176 species that are found in the United States. Only a few of these species are actually harmful to human beings and other mammals.
-It would take over 1.2 million mosquitos sucking your blood to drain the average amount of human blood. It’s safe to say that you shouldn’t worry about that ever happening.
-Only the female mosquito bites its prey. Males primary purpose is for reproduction. This doesn’t mean you want to let the guys off the hook though!
-Female mosquitos typically lay their eggs in damp and moist areas where water collects. If you are having mosquito issues, the last things you want near your home is standing water!
-A female mosquitos saliva contains certain proteins and chemicals that cause the common itchy, red and swelling reaction we experience when bitten. These ladies are a real problem!
-Mosquitos have the incredible ability to mate in midair! Pretty impressive but only causes more problems for us… even worse the whole process can take only 15 seconds!
-Unfortunately for us, human sweat and breath are natural attractants for mosquitos.
-Some species of mosquitos do not travel more than a few hundred yards from where they hatched.
